For many couples, tying the knot in a beach ceremony on Goan shores is the dream. And it has all the makings of a beautiful and memorable day – cool breeze, a relaxed environment, an awesome holiday vibe, the sound of the waves and the seagulls on an uncrowded beach as the evening sun sets….. What more could you ask for?
Not much, you say? However, there is plenty you need to know while organizing a ceremony on the beach. Rest assured though, with years of experience in organising beautiful ceremonies on the beach, we are the specialists you need to make your day a huge success.
Here is a basic list that will give you an outline of all the information you need for your big day on some of the most pristine locations and beautiful beaches here.
The first thing you have to consider is the location of the ceremony. As the state is geographically divided into a Northern and Southern coast, you have plenty of options to choose from as there are several beaches, each with its own distinct personality. If you consider the Northern coast, the beaches here attract plenty of tourism and are very lively compared to the Southern coast that has uncrowded beaches and are also very scenic. Also, the beaches in the South are much bigger and wider and you have plenty of privacy in comparison to those in the North.
Resorts such as the Taj Holiday Village, Taj Aguada, Marquis Beach Resort in Baga, Anjuna, Candolim are popular choices in the North. Along the south you have spectacular locations such as the Lalit, Alila Diwa, Zuri White Sands, Radision Blu, etc. The capital Panaji has a few five-star resorts by the beach like The Marriot Resort, Cidade or the Grand Hyatt.
Most of the four starred and five starred resorts provide clients with multiple options within the property for the wedding ceremony and reception function, both indoor as well as outdoor. Properties by the coastal belt are most preferred as these hotels have numerous indoor banquet halls, well-maintained lawns, multi-cuisine restaurants, etc and also in some cases private beachfront locations.
Waterfront venues are available along the Chapora & Mandovi River; the Fort of Reis Magos and Taj Aguada. For functions on the beach, Zeebop is a very popular option as it can cater to up to 200 guests and has a restaurant on the beach itself. Accommodation options around Zeebop include the Royal Orchid and Kenilworth Resort.
As far as accommodation of your guests is concerned, start the process at least six months in advance. Rooms fill up quickly during peak season and you might not be able to accommodate all your guests in a single resort. A few resorts also provide you with only the venues if required to have the reception and the ceremony on their properties without booking any rooms. This, of course, is also completely dependent on the time of the year as during peak season considering the holiday rush this may not be an option. Towards the end of the season or just around the beginning would be a better time for hotels to only rent out venues without any room bookings.
None of the beaches here are considered as private properties. Although the hotels and resorts arrange for functions on the beach, they have to apply for all the necessary government permissions to hold an outdoor event. Most hotels require you to arrange for these licenses, so just ask your event planner and he/she should be able to acquire these on your behalf.
Another aspect to consider is the time of the year. Due to the state’s tropical weather, it does get very hot during the summer months of April and May. An ideal time to hold your event would thus be anything from November to February. For a beach ceremony the ideal time is around an hour and a half before sunset as the weather is pleasant during this time with a cool evening breeze swaying through the tall palms that fringe the shores. Besides, what’s more romantic than the evening sun setting in the horizon to give you beautiful photographs.
Also note that you would require a license from the Department of Tourism for the utilization of public space for tying the knot by the beach. It would also be important to inform your guests well in advance to make travel arrangements as rooms fill out very quickly during the tourist season. A union by the beach isn’t legal proof of marriage tough, so you would have t0 apply for a court marriage certificate that is issued by the Indian court of law.
